Q: I use MMC to administrator IIS server locally and across the Internet. Every once in awhile I will have MMC connected to a machine and then shut it down saving the settings in MMC. For whatever reason the IIS server is removed, disconnected, or changes IP address. When I open up MMC it tries to reconnect to the server. MMC takes a minute to find out that the machine (or Admin Service) is not responding then comes into view. The problem is that I can't disconnect the machine that has vanished, if MMC can't connect to it, there is no node for that machine and I can't remove it. I have so many vanished machine right now that it takes 5 minutes to MMC to come up on my machine. What can I do?

A: You can work around this by creating a new console file, without the old "ghost" connections. If he launches ISM (rather than computer management), it will be in author mode, and allow new consoles to be saved. There are directions within MMC's help for this.
