Q: What is the best order of software installation for site server?

A: Here is the best order:

  1. NT 4.0 (Enterprise or non-Enterprise) (Don't make the server a BDC)
  2. NT-SP3
  3. SQL 6.5 (Enterprise or non-Enterprise)
  4. SQL 6.5 SP4 (If running non-Enterprise ONLY)
  5. SQL V297 Executable (If running non-Enterprise ONLY)
  6. SQL V318 Executable (If running Enterprise ONLY)
  7. IE 4.01
  8. IE 4.01 SP1 (IE 4.01 SP1 is also available as a single install on the Visual Studio 6 CD)
  9. NTOP
  10. NTOP QFE (If not installing NT-SP4)
  11. Visual Studio V5 or V6
  12. Site Server
  13. Commerce (optional)
  14. Site Server SP1
  15. Visual Studio V5 SP3 OR Visual Studio V6 SP1
  16. NT-SP4
I recommend installing MDAC 2.01 SP1 (despite the few posts put on the listserv)
NOTES: Don't install Exchange or Proxy on your Site Server machine.
Don't install Site Server onto a cluster, it isn't supported.
You can install Site Server onto Windows Load Balancing Service.
Don't change ANY settings in IIS before installing Site Server. (In particular, don't disable NTCR authentication on the default web site)
